"My photographs are the chronicles of a journey, like pages from a diary. Each bears its date and place. (They form, in fact, my private calendar since I am very bad at remembering dates). We find the same subjects repeated. The landscapes, although different, resemble one another; large expanses of empty space, no people. They take on the air of a decor, sometimes resemble scenery. Their unreal aspect is often due to the effects of light, mist and a very short depth of field. The switch from photography to moving image was a natural and necessary step, since I can now combine two domaines that interest me: photography and documentary cinema, in this way exploring a more subjective way of telling a story."

Erika Irmler works in Geneva as a photographer and graphic designer. In the year of 2007, she postgraduates in documentary cinema at the HEAD in Geneva, and began her documentary project on the identity problems of the post-war generation in Berlin.

"Mes photographies parlent d’une chronique de voyage. Elles portent la date et l’endroit. (Elles sont mon calendrier privé ; je suis très mauvaise pour me souvenir des dates…) On retrouve souvent les mêmes sujets. Les paysages, toujours différents, se ressemblent : l’absence de personnes, beaucoup d’espace vide. Ils prennent un air de décor, proche aussi d’une maquette. Leur côté irréel est dû souvent aux effets de lumière et brouillard et une profondeur de champs très courte. Le passage de la photographie à l’image en mouvement était presque nécessaire pour moi. Ça m’a permis de faire coexister deux domaines qui m’intéressent : la photographie (puisque je l’intègre) avec le cinéma documentaire, en explorant ainsi un autre moyen de narration plus subjective."

Erika Irmler travaille à Genève comme photographe et graphiste. En 2007 elle a participé au post-grade proposé à l'école d'art et design de Genève en cinéma documentaire au sein duquel elle a commencé un projet de film parlant sur l'identité de la génération de post-guerre à Berlin.
